'Dissent is most patriotic'

Picture two funkily dressed women wearing only pink from head to toe, with Pink Slip Bush written on their frocks. Such forms of protests against the Bush administration and its policies, using wit, satire and creativity, is what Karam Puri captured through his lens while walking the streets of New York for three months before the presidential polls.

"Unlike what happens in places like Bihar, we do not need to go around burning buildings or smashing car windows to protest." Liberte, is a collection of photographs covering the protests in New York against the Republican National Convention prior to the US Presidential Elections in November 2004. "The right to protest is the most important legacy of democracy. What good is it if you can't dissent?" asks the former investment banker who chucked his plush job to become an "off Broadway" actor.

The Doon school alumnus believes dissent is the most patriotic thing to do. "In the US such an exhibition will not have an impact because they know what they have done in the last couple of years." Puri's photo exhibition is a constant reminder of the fact that 49 per cent of the US did not vote for Bush. "Today, the Republicans are back in power but the struggle continues," says the skillful photographer for whom photography is just another hobby.
