Marathi film Shwaas, India’s official entry for the Academy Awards didn’t make the final cut.

Kumar’s 15-minute film is the story of a young Pakistani boy who accidentally crosses the mine-strewn border into India in pursuit of his cricket ball.

Speaking from Delhi, Kumar said he was too stunned and besieged by phone calls from family and friends to react to the announcement. ‘‘My uncle just called from China. A friend of mine chanced upon the announcement on the official Oscars website and called me up immediately from Los Angeles,’’ said a dazed Kumar.

Kumar is working on another short film, The Forest, which is a thriller set in the jungles of Uttaranchal. ‘‘I’m tying up finances for the film and will start shooting for it in April this year,’’ Kumar said.

Meanwhile, Marathi film Shwaas is out of the big league. ‘‘It’s a big thing for my team that a small film like Shwaas actually made it so far,’’ said Sandeep Sawant adding, ‘‘After all it’s just another competition, so it’s okay.’’
