Tsunami Relief Effort

Dear DOSCO

The level of devastation caused by the Tsunami must have been seen by all - the pictures we see on television tell only part of the story. The situation is much worse and substantial efforts will need to be made to help those in need and eventually try return to normalcy. And this effort needs SUPPORT - now, in cash and in kind.

Tsunami victions looking for help

On behalf of Anoop Bishnoi, President of the DSOBS, myself and all our colleagues on the Executive Committee, this appeal is a call for action. Our immediate need is to work towards providing RELIEF. Subsequently, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation will be addressed. For now, relief requires material like, medicines, water, food, shelter (tents), clothes, etc. In addition, trained and willing workers.

I have been in touch with old boys who are in the areas impacted. In Chennai, A Vellayan (87T-1968), Vice Chairman of the Murugappa Group of companies (EID Parry, Cholamandalam Securities, and many more) has put his corporations might into relief efforts with a major focus on the most affected areas of coastal Tamil Nadu. For the immediate we have been in contact with another old boy, Ajay Pratap Singh (214H-1966) who has just commissioned a Water plant in Ennore (in the heart of the impacted area) and he has agreed to try restart the plant within the next 24 hours and supply drinking water. This drinking water will be loaded into water tankers which will be arranged by Vellayan's organisation and they will manage the distribution subsequently. Each water tanker of approximately 12000 litres of water will cost us about Rs15,000.00. Gentlemen, we need to support this as being an effort which is high on the "need" list, is immediate, and, will be delivered as promised. Please send in as much as you can - I am sure you would be contributing through many other channels - our intent is to be effective and immediate and we need your support.

Please send in your contributions in favor of the "Doon School Old Boys' Society" via electronic wire transfer, cheque or demand draft payable in New Delhi. Cheques/Drafts can be mailed to the secretariat office at:

Doon School Old Boys' Society 1007 Bhikaji Cama Bhavan (10th Floor) Bhikaji Cama Place New Delhi 110 066

The Electronic Wire Transfer details can be found on our website, www.dsobs.org.

In addition, we are collecting material that is needed and which we will arrange to send to the Murugappa Group for onward distribution. Arranging logistics is a challenge and we are trying to get government clearance to airlift the material through Indian Airlines. This material can be dry food items (rice, sugar, etc), medicines, clothes, tents and other material that can provide shelter. This effort is being coordinated in Delhi by:

1.Ranjan Bhalla (368J-1972) mobile no. +91 98112 71428, Email: ranjan@matrixgurgaon.com
2.Gurmeet Singh (883T-1982) mobile no. +91 98101 15290, Email: singh_jaspreet@vsnl.com

We are also in touch with Rear Admiral Rakesh Kala (138H-1966) who is Chief of Staff of the Tri Services Command (Army, Navy and Air Force) in the Andaman Islands based in Port Blair and as you can imagine is in the thick of things. As soon as we have material and are able to arrange shipment we will do so through government channels as this is considered the most effective way to reach into the Andaman Islands.

For more information, please feel free to call me at +91 98100 28775, Kishore Lahiri (30K-1974) at +91 98101 89607 (Email: kklahiri@vsnl.com) or either Ranjan or Gurmeet at their contacts as listed above.

On behalf of all of us involved, I seek the DOSCO spirit to emerge - no amount is too small or too much. Along with your contribution, please let us know your full details so we can send you a receipt and income tax exemption certification as appropriate.

Seasons Greetings and to a Prosperous 2005.

Sincerely,

Gautam Chadha
